Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Classes in Broomfield, CO

Train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a welcoming, no-ego academy. Authentic instruction under proven black belt lineage, for complete beginners, hobbyists, and competitors alike.

Authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Heart of Broomfield

Limitless Combat Academy has been Broomfield's home for serious Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training since 2017. Our program is an official affiliate of the Shokunin Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association under Robert Wunderlich, meaning the techniques you learn here trace back to legitimate black belt lineage, not a self-promoted, online-certified program.

We built this academy on a simple idea: world-class grappling does not require a hostile environment. Whether you walk in as someone who has never set foot on a mat, an experienced grappler looking for a new home, or somewhere in between, you will train alongside students who are here to get better and help you do the same. No egos. No "smashing the new guy." No hazing. Just real coaching, hard rounds, and a community that shows up for each other.

Below is everything you need to know about our BJJ program, what it is, why people train it, what your first class looks like, who is teaching you, and how to book your free first session.

What Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (And Why People Train It)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (often shortened to BJJ or jiu-jitsu) is a grappling-based martial art that focuses on ground fighting, leverage, and submissions. Developed in Brazil from traditional Japanese jiu-jitsu and judo, BJJ has spent the last century proving, over and over again, that technique and leverage can overcome size and strength.

It is sometimes called "the gentle art" because BJJ emphasizes control over violence. The goal is to safely neutralize an opponent through positional dominance and submissions like chokes and joint locks, rather than striking. That makes it one of the most effective self-defense systems ever developed, and one of the few martial arts you can train at full intensity, against fully resisting opponents, almost every day.

Who BJJ Is For

  • Adults of any age, size, or athletic background, BJJ was literally designed for the smaller person
  • Complete beginners with zero martial arts experience
  • People looking for serious self-defense that works against larger attackers
  • MMA athletes building their ground game
  • Competitors training for IBJJF, Fight to Win, Grappling Industries, and local tournaments
  • Anyone looking for the most engaging full-body workout they have ever tried

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Size and strength matter less than you think

BJJ is built around the idea that a smaller, weaker person can defeat a larger, stronger one through technique, leverage, and timing. There is no other martial art where that's truer. It's why BJJ has reshaped self-defense and combat sports worldwide.

You can train it hard every day

Because BJJ does not involve striking, you can train techniques at 100% intensity against a fully resisting partner, every single class. That feedback loop is why BJJ practitioners get good fast, and why people refer to it as "human chess."

It's the most engaging workout you'll ever try

BJJ is a moving puzzle. Every round, you're solving a problem in real time. Your conditioning improves dramatically, but you forget you're working out because your brain is too busy.

Skill compounds for life

Striking arts can be hard on aging bodies. BJJ practitioners often train well into their 60s and 70s. The skills you build don't fade, they get sharper, even as your athleticism changes.

Benefits of Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Our students come for different reasons, fitness, self-defense, competition, mental challenge, and they walk away with all of it. Here's what regular BJJ training actually delivers:

Physical Benefits

  • Full-body conditioning. Rolling (live sparring) is one of the most intense full-body workouts ever invented. You'll build cardio, strength, and endurance you didn't know was possible.
  • Functional strength. BJJ builds the kind of strength that matters, grip, core, hips, neck. The kind of strength you actually use in real life.
  • Flexibility and mobility. Hips, shoulders, and spine all open up. Many students say BJJ fixed back and hip pain they'd had for years.
  • Fat loss and body composition. A typical class burns 500–800 calories. Most students see significant body recomposition within their first few months.
  • Better awareness of your body. You'll develop coordination, balance, and proprioception that translate to every other sport and physical activity.

Mental Benefits

  • Problem-solving under pressure. BJJ is called human chess for a reason. You're constantly thinking 2–3 moves ahead, in real time, while exhausted. That skill bleeds into every part of life.
  • Stress relief. It's impossible to think about your inbox when someone is trying to choke you. Most students leave class lighter than they came in.
  • Humility and resilience. You will get tapped out. A lot. Learning to lose, learn, and come back tomorrow builds a mental toughness most people never develop.
  • Confidence without aggression. Knowing you can control a situation physically makes you less reactive, not more. BJJ practitioners are famously calm under pressure.

Practical Benefits

  • Self-defense that actually works. BJJ is widely considered the most effective real-world self-defense art ever developed, especially for smaller people defending against larger attackers.
  • A foundation for MMA. Every serious MMA fighter trains BJJ. If you want to compete or cross-train, this is your ground game.
  • A lifelong community. BJJ academies are famous for the bonds they create. You're not a membership number here, you're a training partner.

What to Expect in Your First Class

Walking into a BJJ gym for the first time can feel intimidating. We get it, most of our students felt the exact same way before their first class. Here's what actually happens:

  • You'll be greeted at the door. We'll introduce you to a coach, give you a quick tour, and show you where to change.
  • Wear comfortable athletic clothes. For your first class you don't need a gi. Shorts without pockets or zippers and a t-shirt work fine. We'll get you set up with proper gear if you decide to continue.
  • Class starts with a warm-up. Light cardio and movement drills to get your hips, shoulders, and spine ready for the mat. Modified for your fitness level.
  • You'll learn fundamental positions and techniques. How to fall safely, how to escape from common positions, and a basic submission or two. A coach will walk you through every step.
  • Drilling with a patient partner. You'll practice the technique slowly with someone experienced. No one is going to crank submissions on a brand-new student. That's not how we do things here.
  • Live rolling is optional. Most beginners watch their first few rolling rounds before jumping in. There is zero pressure to spar on day one.
  • You'll leave tired, sore, and hooked. Most first-timers can't stop thinking about it for days. Fair warning: BJJ tends to take over your life in the best possible way.

- Matt K.

Great environment. Fantastic coaches and instructors. Actually help you learn the technique and provide a challenge at the same time. Definitely recommend this place if you’re trying to improve on yourself.

- Mohamed H.

I have trained at a few places and I am impressed with the level of training this place has to offer. If you are someone who is serious about this lifestyle, you need to come here. If you are someone who wants to just do it recreational, you need to come here, or if you are in between. The instructors are here to make sure you learn and the gym is welcoming. The first day on the mat, I felt like I was already apart of the tribe. So stop making excuses, get in and start getting that sweat going!

- Caid R.

This place has a positive environment with much more focus on camaraderie than most places I have been. The teachers here focus on their students and make sure you understand instructions. It’s not a huge place but that adds to it. I highly recommend taking the time to learn here.

- Ryan Q.

Fantastic gym to train at. Everyone is focused on technique rather than ego and the coaches want you to succeed no matter your skill level. Great for beginners too.

- David D.

I have been to a few gyms before Limitless and I have never felt so welcomed immediately. Everyone is very helpful and friendly in all of the classes. My 6 year old loves the kids class! I will never go anywhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need any experience to start BJJ?
No. The vast majority of our students walk in with zero experience. Every class is structured so beginners can follow along safely, and Coach Mark leads dedicated beginner classes that focus on the fundamentals. Coaches break down techniques step by step and pair newer students with patient training partners.
  • What do I need to wear to my first class?
Athletic shorts without pockets or zippers (which can scratch you or your partner) and a t-shirt. That's it. We have loaner gis available if you decide to continue training. Most students buy their own gi within the first few weeks, a good beginner gi runs around $80–$120.
  • Is BJJ safe?
When taught correctly, yes. BJJ is one of the safest combat sports because it does not involve striking. Submissions are applied slowly and partners tap to signal release. At Limitless, beginners drill techniques slowly with experienced partners, and rolling is introduced gradually and only when students are ready. Injuries in our program are rare.
  • How long does it take to get good at BJJ?
BJJ has a famously deep learning curve, which is part of the appeal. Most students start feeling competent in basic positions after 6–12 months. Belt promotions are earned, not bought, a blue belt typically takes 1.5–2.5 years of consistent training, and progress is recognized publicly through stripes along the way.
  • I'm not in great shape, is that a problem?
Not at all. BJJ is one of the best ways to get in shape. Coaches scale intensity to your level, and rolling intensity is controlled by you and your partner. We've had students in their 40s, 50s, and 60s start with no athletic background and become serious practitioners. Your fitness will catch up fast.
  • I'm a smaller person; will I get crushed by bigger training partners?
BJJ was literally designed for the smaller person. Technique and leverage matter more than size, and good training partners adjust intensity for safety. As you get better, you'll routinely tap out training partners much bigger than you. That's not theory, it's the whole point of the art.
  • Do you offer kids' BJJ?
Yes: we have a dedicated Kids Jiu-Jitsu program for ages 6–12. It's a separate page on our site with its own schedule and curriculum.
  • What's the free first session like?
It's a full regular class, same warm-up, same instruction, same training partners as our paying members. No watered-down "intro" version. After class we'll answer your questions and walk you through membership options if you want to continue.
